Painted Ceramics - Tiles

wedding commision box

I do a variety of 16th century style tiles.  I create museum reproductions and original designs.  I set my tiles into boxes or trivet frames.  I also do custom tiles for kitchens and bathrooms

The design of the tile on the right is based upon Italian Renaissance traditions of the 15th and 16th centuries. During the Renaissance noble families would commission special ceramic pieces to commemorate weddings.  Historical wedding commissions typically featured holding hands.

Reproduction Tiles

The following tiles were all done using the maiolica technique on commercial terra cotta Italian tiles. The the lettering on the ribbon on the gauntlet tile is in Spanish and translates to "Good Faith is Unchangeable" in Spanish.

Miscellaneous tiles

The following tiles were insprired by a variety of sources. The blue and white tile with the chuch in the center was set into a jewelry box. It is a companion piece to the Castroville Lace platter. The archery tile was inspired by 16th century plates depicting armour. The ruffled ovalo tile is primarily based on a 16th century tile from Montelupo. The portrait tile was based on a small portion of an elaborate 16th century plate.
